Over the past several months, all over the nation, people have been dressing up as clowns trying to scare others for mysterious reasons. Nobody knows exactly why this clown “epidemic” started, but it has shocked people all over the country.
The first clown spotting occurred August 29, 2016. Residents living in the Fleetwood Manor Apartments in Greenville County, South Carolina, reported a person dressed in a clown costume trying to lure children into the woods to local authorities. A similar report was received September 4 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Just weeks later, authorities locked down two high schools in Southern Alabama after clowns threatened students and were spotted on the school grounds. Several incidents like this continued to occur through the month of September spanning from South Carolina to New Jersey, then to bigger states like Arizona and Texas. Authorities in Texas started a search for any lurking clowns and urged residents to help search for the clowns.
Clowns in Missoula have gone as far as making Facebook pages to threaten towns and high schools. Facebook pages such as “Ain’t Clownin’ Around,” “Garbo The Clown,” “Zootown Klown” and many more have threatened cities local high schools, businesses or just the general public. Threats include violence, murder, torture, and vandalism.
A local threat to Missoula high schools was made on October 5, 2016 saying: “Us klowns will be at all Missoula high schools this Friday night to kidnap and kill some students be ready Missoula.” Missoula authorities looked into the incident and recommended that people not worry. The superintendent of MCPS sent an email to all parents warning them of the situation, but reassured them that there would be police officers in and around the schools throughout the day. No harm was done to any student or staff member and the threat turned out to be a student prank. Authorities are still deciding what to do about the situation.
Not only were the clowns threatening and making appearances on schools, they have also been seen robbing gas stations and fast food businesses. It’s not certain if the people robbing businesses were a part of the previous clown sightings, or if it was just a tactic to go unknown for committing the crime.
There have not been any recent sightings of clowns, but it is unclear if they just stopped dressing as clowns or if they are planning something bigger. But as of now, clowns no longer seem to be a threat.
