The creation of social media allows us to have any bit of news right at the click of a button. Social media is neither good nor bad. In fact, it has revolutionized the way the Internet runs and how often it is used.
Social media can bring people’s attention to issues that otherwise would have been brushed off like police brutality and shootings, overseas issues such as bombings, terrorist attacks and radical activity. Whether it’s to update Facebook or send out a clever tweet, some form of social media is being used.
Some people see social media as a form of isolation. Since social media really took off, people, especially teens, have been wrapped up in their phones and what’s going on on various different social media apps. I, myself, am guilty of being sucked into the “black hole” of social media.
I believe that many teens are so dependent on their phones that if they don’t have it with them at all times, they will feel lost or like a piece of them is missing. From personal experience, I have met many people, that can’t help but go on their phone a couple times an hour to check up on what’s new with Facebook, who posted a new photo on Instagram, or who posted a funny tweet on Twitter. Because of this obsessive behavior centered around social media, some teens are actually isolating themselves from the world outside of their phones whether they know it or not.
Not only are teens isolating themselves from the world outside of their phones, they spend family time on their phones looking at Facebook or Twitter. When you’re looking at social media, you don’t really realize just how much time has actually gone by.
I believe that without social media, teens would be more social and outgoing. Since social media, there has been an increase in the number of teens who claim to have depression or another type of mental illness. Social media is an easy way for people to be bullied, harassed, or even stalked.
I am not completely bashing on social media as a whole, because social media is actually a really great invention and has changed the way our generation is run. However, media is so consuming and addictive that teens often don’t realize just how much they are on media sites. Social media is a great invention and a nice tool to see what is going on in other regions of the country or world, however, it has become a way for teens to isolate themselves and waste time.
