The 2017 Garden City Duals wrapped up last weekend with Sentinel taking the trophy back from Big Sky High School, winning 36-21.
Sentinel started the tournament strong from the second they walked in to the gym entering to the Star Wars’ “Imperial March” and circled Big Sky as they warmed up on the center mats.
In the beginning of the tournament, the Big Sky Eagles had to immediately forfeit two weight classes, both 103 class and 182 class due to illness and injury.
Freshman Jackson Bakken defeated Carter Corcanan of Big Sky in the 113-pound bracket and Bryar Newbary of Sentinel who pinned Kendahl O’Dell of Big Sky in the 205-pound bracket.
Even after the two forfeits, the Eagles still managed to secure some wins. Big Sky’s Hunter Meinzen beat Senior Cameron Hegel in the 138 weight class, and Mason Corcoran pinned Junior Albin Haglund in the 170 weight class.
The crowds from both schools were also a spectacle of the night. Big Sky crowds cheered a boisterous cheer as they secured a 6-6 score when their 132 pounder Dougie Swanson beat Junior Reece Eckley of Sentinel.
The team will head to the seeding tournament at Flathead High School this weekend.
Head coach Jeremy LaPorte said, “We will need to maximize placing as many kids at high seeds as possible in order to get good draws at the state tournament. I think we are all looking forward to state as this is the closest the AA has been for a while, so really the top three could be a number of different teams. That is our goal as a team, but it will take everyone to attain the goal.”
