The Sentinel soccer teams’ hard work paid off at the 2016 AA State Soccer tournament. Both teams competed in Kalispell Oct. 27-29. While neither boys nor girls finished as well as they would have liked, they represented Sentinel well, earning a second place finish for boys and a third for girls.
The boys beat out Billings West 4-0 on Thursday and Bozeman 2-1 on Friday to earn a spot in the championship match against Hellgate. It was an emotional game on Saturday with the state championship and crosstown rivalries on the line.
Hellgate took first place with 3-2 win over Sentinel, a tough loss for the team. As Coach Dan Lochridge points out, however, the Sentinel Spartans had not beaten Bozeman in years or come this close to first place. So despite missing out on the title, it was a successful season for the team, and a fitting sendoff for the nine senior boys.
The girls teams also had an impressive run. They won their opening bid against Billings Skyview 1-0 on Thursday in a shootout, then lost to Bozeman 3-0 on Friday. On Saturday they earned 3rd place with a win over Billings West 2-1.
The girls’ team also has nine outgoing seniors this season, but they expect to be strong next year as well. Both teams hope to match or exceed their performance in the coming seasons, but are satisfied with the 2016-17 season.
